TARGET AUDIENCE: This program is designed for nurses and other health care professionals.

FOCUS: This program has been developed to meet the mandated AIDS education requirement in the state of Kentucky, including basic medical and epidemiological information about AIDS and HIV; methods of transmission, prevention, and current medical treatment; and management of HIV in the healthcare workplace and other environments, consistent with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Alice Potts, MSN, RN, professional work experience includes many areas of nursing, including Medical-Surgical, Surgical Services, Maternity, Infection Control, and Nursing Administration.  She has served on Eastern Kentucky University faculty as a part-time clinical instructor for the Associate Degree Nursing program from 1999-2006, and became a full-time faculty member in Fall 2006.

OBJECTIVES:

    1. Recognize how HIV affects the human immune system.
    2. Describe the history, virology, epidemiology, transmission and prevention of the HIV disease and AIDS.
    3. Discuss testing, diagnosis, the disease process, and current medical treatment.
    4. Describe some of the psychological and physical effects of HIV/AIDS, and the psychosocial impact of the disease on patients, families, significant others, and caregivers.
    5. Discuss the implications, appropriate attitudes, rewards, and benefits for health care and the helping professionals who provide care for persons with AIDS or HIV disease.
    6. List services for the person with HIV/AIDS.

Cancellation Policy:  A participant who wishes to cancel registration must notify the Division of Continuing Education and Development office at least three working days (February 9th) prior to the workshop date in order to receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee.  After that date a substitute may be sent, but no refund.  If an offering is cancelled by EKU, the registration fee will be refunded in full.

FOCUS: This program will examine evidence-based practice which is “an integration of the best evidence available, nursing expertise, and the values and preferences of the individuals, families, and communities who are served” – Sigma Theta Tau International 2005.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Linda Norman, DSN, RN, FAAN has been involved in nursing education for 32 years, serving in administrative positions for the past 22 years, 16 of which have been at Vanderbilt University School of Nursing as the Associate Dean of Academics and most recently as co-coordinator of the PhD in Nursing program. She has also been actively involved in the area of continuous quality improvement for the past 12 years, serving on the advisory committee for the Interdisciplinary Professional Education Collaborative and the Kitchen Cabinet for Professional Education of the Institute for Health Care Improvement (IHI). She is a founding member of IHI's Summer Institute for Leadership in Quality Improvement for Health Professional Educators. She serves on the research team to evaluate the effectiveness of the Johnson and Johnson Media Campaign related to the nursing shortage. She developed the evaluation component for several curricula and education projects using a continual improvement framework. She has been recognized for her expertise and knowledge of nursing education and quality improvement, as evidenced by her induction into the American Academy of Nursing in 2004. She is a past member of the Health Resource Service Agency National Advisory Committee on Nursing Education and Practice and currently serves on the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission's Review Panel. She is active in international nursing activities, recently being named co-chair of the NLN/NLNAC Global Education Task Force.

FOCUS: This half day workshop will introduce the concept of patient and family engagement to create a cultural shift in focus by involving the family in all the treatment plans.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Terrell Smith, MSN, RN is the director of the Patient and Family Centered Care for the Vanderbilt University Medical Center and Clinic.  She continues her effort to improve quality care, patient safety, and nurse satisfaction.  Many adult hospitals are expanding the concept of Patient and Family-Centered Care from their pediatric areas to all clinical practice sites.
Terrell Smith received her undergraduate degree in Nursing at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and her graduate degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. Terrell began her career as a pediatric intensive care unit nurse at The Children's Hospital of Alabama, and served in Brazil as a Peace Corps volunteer nurse. She held leadership positions at Children's Hospital of Alabama, and Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans. She was been at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital for thirteen years with primary responsibility for the inpatient units. In 2005, Terrell was recruited into a new position to focus on the development of a patient and family-centered strategy for the adult hospital.

OBJECTIVES:

    1. Discuss basic principles of Family Centered Care.
    2. Describe steps necessary for ‘getting stated’.
    3. Identify potential champions for implementation of Family Centered Care.
    4. Review common pitfalls to adoption of Family Centered Care.
    5. Implement a dynamic plan for Patient and Family Engagement building on synergy of institution’s leaders.

FOCUS: This workshop will provide an update of recent drug approvals, antibiotics and role of multi-drug resistant organisms in appropriate antibiotic selection, management of the diabetic client with basal-bolus insulin therapy, and special needs of the bariatric client-from supplements to pharmacological considerations.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Michael P. Herald, Pharm.D. received his degree from the University of Kentucky in 2000.  He has experience in internal medicine, including the treatment of infectious diseases and pharmacokinetic dosing and is involved with multiple clinical trials.  He is currently the Coordinator of Clinical Pharmacy Services at Appalachian Regional Medical Center.
Tiffany Herald, Pharm.D. received her degree from the University of Kentucky in 2001.  She has experience in internal medicine.  She is currently a clinical pharmacist at the Appalachian Regional Medical Center.

OBJECTIVES:

    1. Describe recent drug approvals in past year and clinical relevance.
    2. Update antibiotic usage in acute care and outpatient settings.
    3. Discuss role of multi-drug resistant organisms in selection of antibiotic therapy.
    4. Review administration of Basal-Bolus Insulin Therapy in the management of the diabetic client.
    5. Analyze the special needs for vitamins and supplements and pharmacologic considerations in bariatric surgical clients.

Nursing Home Administrators: All programs approved by the Kentucky Board of Nursing are considered pre-approved by the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Nursing Home Administrators (KBLNHA).

FEE: $90.  Includes instruction, handout materials, contact hours, supplies, break, and lunch.

TARGET AUDIENCE: This program is designed for nursing leaders in acute care, outpatient care/clinics and long-term care, public health and school nursing as well as academic settings.  RNs, LPNs, ARNPs and other interested health care professionals.

FOCUS: This workshop will update nursing leaders on the Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) activities, current legislation, licensure requirements, mandatory reporting and KARE program.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Sharon Eli Mercer, MSN, RN received both her MSN and BSN from Spalding University and her Diploma in Nursing from Norton Memorial Infirmary in Louisville, KY.  She is the Nursing Practice Consultant for the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
Joyce A. Bonick, JD, RN received her Juris Doctorate Degree from the New England School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts in 1989 and her Diploma in Nursing from McKeesport Hospital School of Nursing in 1968.  She is presently the Branch Manager for the Credentials Branch at the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
Sandra L. Johanson, RN received her Diploma in Nursing from Norton Memorial Infirmary in Louisville, KY in 1971. She is presently the manager for the Consumer Protection Branch of the Kentucky Board of Nursing.
Scott D. Majors, JD received his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of Kentucky in 1983.  He has been serving the Kentucky Board of Nursing as its prosecuting attorney since January of 2009.
Paula S. Schenk, MPH, RN received her Master in Public Health from the University of North Carolina in 1985 and her BSN from Spalding College in 1980.  She is the Compliance Section Supervisor for the KARE for Nurses Program at the Kentucky Board of Nursing.

OBJECTIVES:

    1. Review the Kentucky Board of Nursing’s role as a regulatory agency; its mission, programs and activities, including current legislation.
    2. Examine the responsibility and accountability of nurses, nursing supervisors and administrators in relation to the Kentucky Nursing Laws, nursing practice, and current practice opinions.
    3. Discuss the complaint and disciplinary processes including mandatory reporting, investigation and resolution of complaints with actual case scenarios.
    4. Discuss the process of obtaining initial licensure by examination.
    5. Describe the requirements of nurses on probation and your role as an employer/peer.
    6. Explain the Kentucky Alternative Recovery Effort (KARE) for Nurses Program and the incidence of chemical dependency in the nursing profession.

Attendance Requirement:  Must stay for entire program and complete a written evaluation to be awarded contact hours.

Cancellation Policy:  A participant who wishes to cancel registration must notify the Division of Continuing Education and Development office at least three working days (May 3rd) prior to the workshop date in order to receive a refund minus a $10 processing fee.  After that date a substitute may be sent, but no refund.  If an offering is cancelled by EKU, the registration fee will be refunded in full.

HIV/AIDS Update for Health Care Professionals

In order to receive contact hours you need to read the packet and complete the post-test and activity evaluation. If you pass the post-test, you receive a CE certificate in the mail. If you fail, you have the option of completing the test again at no additional cost. All of the requirements must be met by providing necessary documentation.

FOCUS:  This program has been developed to meet the mandated AIDS education requirement in the state of Kentucky, including a basic medical and epidemiological information about AIDS and HIV; methods of transmission, prevention, and current medical treatment; and management of HIV in the healthcare workplace and other environments, consistent with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.

*Requirement for Completion: Must obtain a score of 80% on test (may retake one time and resubmit) and complete the program evaluation.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS: 
Alice Potts’, MSN, RN, professional work experience includes many areas of nursing, including Medical-Surgical, Surgical Services, Maternity, Infection Control, and Nursing Administration.  She has served on Eastern Kentucky University faculty as a part-time clinical instructor for the Associate Degree Nursing program form 1999-2006, and became a full-time faculty member in Fall 2006.

OBJECTIVES:

    1. Recognize how HIV affects the human immune system.
    2. Describe the history, virology, epidemiology, transmission and prevention of the HIV disease and AIDS.
    3. Discuss testing, diagnosis, the disease process, and current medical treatment.
    4. Describe some of the psychological and physical effects of HIV/AIDS, and the psychosocial impact of the disease on patients, families, and significant others, and caregivers.
    5. Discuss the implications, appropriate attitudes, rewards, and benefits for health care and the helping professionals who provide care for persons with AIDS or HIV disease.
    6. List services for the person with HIV/AIDS.
