TARGET AUDIENCE: Nurse practitioners that work in primary care settings, or emergency departments.
FOCUS: The purpose of this offering is to present to Nurse Practitioners common musculoskeletal injuries-including fractures encountered in primary care. Focus will be on pertinent physical exam and x-ray findings along with appropriate management. The management plan will include appropriate splinting techniques in a hands-on splinting workshop.
FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Delwin B. Jacoby, MSN, ARNP, Family Nurse practitioner, works as an FNP for Bluegrass Farmworker Health Center in Lexington, KY. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Larry S. Kelley, RN, C, MSN, PhD, works as an Associate Professor in Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Department at EKU. Dr. Kelley has also taught physical assessment at the post-graduate level, undergraduate level and in workshop settings throughout the state and nationally.

- Identify common musculoskeletal conditions.
- Outline a management plan for specific musculoskeletal conditions.
- Apply a splint for selected fractures or injuries.

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Joanne R. Duffy, PhD, RN, CCRN is a tenured Associate Professor at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. Dr. Duffy is best known for her leadership in maximizing patient outcomes and research relating to the measurement of caring. Dr. Duffy pioneered a research program linking nurse caring to patient outcomes and designed the Caring Assessment Tool. She also developed the Quality-Caring Model© which integrates the relationship-centered nature of nursing with the evidence-based culture of modern-day health care. She was the first recipient of the Annual Health Care Research Award given by the National Institute of Health Care Management. Dr. Duffy is a well published researcher whose work has led to changes in practice and policy for the improvement of patient outcomes.

FOCUS: This program has been developed to provide an introduction to “(Advanced) Patient Simulation” as an instruction method. Basics of simulation and integration into course curriculums will be discussed, including development of case scenarios and the infrastructure required to meet the needs of students and faculty for successful implementation.
FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Pamela R. Jeffries, DNS, RN, FAAN, associate professor and associate dean for undergraduate programs at the Indiana University School of Nursing, was the recipient of the National League in Nursing Education Research Award for 2007. She is currently serving as the director of a three-year NLN faculty development initiative involving simulation modules into teaching. She is nationally recognized for her work in this area in bringing practical application to this model in “how to” do it.

FACULTY: Charlie Williamson, MSN, RN, served as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Eastern Kentucky University. He has 26 years of experience in the Mental Health Nursing field,
and has worked with clients across the lifespan who have been affected by domestic
violence. Charlie also teaches the domestic violence content at EKU. Part of that content
includes a community experience for students at the Hope Center's Women's
and Men's Homeless Shelters in Lexington, KY, where domestic violence is often part of the history of those who reside at the shelters.

TARGET: Nurses and other health care professionals who are interested in the area of
Domestic violence and the effects of violence on the victim’s mental and physical health.
This offering includes the domestic violence training requirements as mandated by
Kentucky law and all components of the KBN model curriculum approved for
licensed nurses.
FOCUS: Domestic or intimate partner violence (IPV), affects individuals of all ethnic
and socioeconomic backgrounds. This offering will refer to women as victims, since
they are affected 95% of the time, and males as perpetrators, although males make up a

FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Alice Potts’, MSN, RN, professional work experience includes many areas of nursing, including Medical-Surgical, Surgical Services, Maternity, Infection Control, and Nursing Administration. She has served on Eastern Kentucky University faculty as a part-time clinical instructor for the Associate Degree Nursing program form 1999-2006, and became a full-time faculty member in Fall 2006.
OBJECTIVES:
- Recognize how HIV affects the human immune system.
2. Describe the history, virology, epidemiology, transmission and prevention of the HIV disease and AIDS.
- Discuss testing, diagnosis, the disease process, and current medical treatment.
- Describe some of the psychological and physical effects of HIV/AIDS, and the psychosocial impact of the disease on patients, families, and significant others, and caregivers.
- Discuss the implications, appropriate attitudes, rewards, and benefits for health care and the helping professionals who provide care for persons with AIDS or HIV disease.
- List services for the person with HIV/AIDS.
