TARGET AUDIENCE: Registered Nurses that participate in Health Ministry and Faith Community Nursing who would like an in-depth educational experience and growth as a Faith Community Nurse. Any individual seeking more knowledge about Faith Community Nursing is welcome to attend.
FOCUS: The purpose of this program is to provide educational preparation for registered nurses who desire to further their knowledge and practice of Faith Community (Parish) Nursing*. The participant will be prepared to function in the roles of a Faith Community Nurse which include:
- An Integrator of Faith and Health.
- A Health Educator, promoting Wellness.
- A Personal Health Counselor, advocating personal responsibility.
- A Referral Agent.
- A Teacher and Coordinator of Volunteers and Support Groups.
- A Health Advocate.
* The Basic Parish Nurse Preparation Course follows the curriculum established by the International Parish Nurse Resource Center (IPNRC). It is designed for the working nurse and will be conducted over four days and two evenings, in two separate weekend sessions.

Rosie Albright, MSN, ARNP & Teresa (Terry) Casey, MSN ARNP, are both practicing Faith Community Nurses and Coordinators of Ephraim McDowell Health’s Faith Community Nurse Service. Both are approved educators through the International Parish Nurse Resource Center.
Audrey Powell, RN, MSN is the Executive Director of Community Services at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, KY.
Margaret J. “Peggy” Hickman, EdD, MDiv, RN is an Associate Professor for Public Health/Community Health Nursing for the University of Kentucky. Peggy is also a Community Health & Development Specialist and an Interim Minister.
Diane Carr Kiser, RN, MSN, FCN is the Health Ministries Coordinator form Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
Betty Purcell, RN, MSN is the Wellness Coordinator at Rockcastle Regional Hospital & Respiratory Care Center in Mt. Vernon, KY.
Jefferson Calico, M.Div. has been a Adjunct Professor of Religion for Somerset Community College and is currently working on his PhD in World Religions at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY.

FOCUS: This program has been developed to meet the mandated AIDS education requirement in the state of Kentucky, including basic medical and epidemiological information about AIDS and HIV; methods of transmission, prevention, and current medical treatment; and management of HIV in the healthcare workplace and other environments, consistent with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards.
FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Alice Potts, MSN, RN, professional work experience includes many areas of nursing, including Medical-Surgical, Surgical Services, Maternity, Infection Control, and Nursing Administration. She has served on Eastern Kentucky University faculty as a part-time clinical instructor for the Associate Degree Nursing program from 1999-2006, and became a full-time faculty member in Fall 2006.
OBJECTIVES:
- Recognize how HIV affects the human immune system.
- Describe the history, virology, epidemiology, transmission and prevention of the HIV disease and AIDS.
- Discuss testing, diagnosis, the disease process, and current medical treatment.
- Describe some of the psychological and physical effects of HIV/AIDS, and the psychosocial impact of the disease on patients, families, significant others, and caregivers.
- Discuss the implications, appropriate attitudes, rewards, and benefits for health care and the helping professionals who provide care for persons with AIDS or HIV disease.
- List services for the person with HIV/AIDS.

FOCUS: This workshop provides the latest information from a clinical perspective on medications used for the treatment of mental health conditions.
FACULTY/PRESENTERS:
Maureen McCabe, MD, is the Medical Director of Bluegrass Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board, and an adult psychiatrist at Richmond Comprehensive Care Center. She is a graduate of University of California, Davis School of Medicine and Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry, is Board Certified in Adult Psychiatry and Internal Medicine, and a member of the American and Kentucky Medical Associations. She has 15 years of psychiatric practice, including work with multiple diagnosis patients, patients with combined medical/psychiatric illness, and psychopharmacology.
FACILITATOR:
Beverly Gilliam Hart, RN, MSN, PhD, has been a professor in EKU’s Baccalaureate & Graduate Nursing program since 1989. She is also an Advanced Adult Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner at Bluegrass Regional Mental Health.
OBJECTIVES:
- Discuss anxiety spectrum disorders and available pharmacologic treatment options.
- Describe depressive disorders and appropriate pharmacological management.
- Review bipolar disorder and latest pharmacologic treatment recommendations.
- Examine psychotic disorders and pharmacologic treatment principles.
- Discuss potential side effects of medications, their evaluation and treatment.

*Infections: Cystitis, UTI
Testing for Vaginal Infections
*Trichomonas, Gardnerella, Neisseria, Beta Streptococcus, Candida.
Some laboratory tests to be covered include: RBC Indices, Reticulocyte count, WBC differential, absolute vs. relative counts, urine reagent strip and microscopics, gram stains and cultures. Emphasis will be placed on specimen collection, abnormal tests values and age variations.

Philip Campbell, MS, MT (ASCP), Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science at Eastern Kentucky University.
Kim Campbell, MS, MT(ASCP), CLS(NCA), Medical Instructional Specialist in the Division of Clinical Laboratory Science at the University of Kentucky.
Both faculty have presented lectures and workshops for home health care providers and nurse practitioners at EKU and at the University of Kentucky.
OBJECTIVES:
1. Utilize collections methods that will not adversely affect lab results.
2. Analyze hematology and urinalysis reports to related disorders.
3. Utilize the case study approach as a problem solving tool that is based on the laboratory findings.

FOCUS FOR SUNDAY: Update of psychopharmacological treatments, including problems with these treatments, use of KASPER System and discussion of prescription drug fraud.
FOCUS FOR MONDAY: The purpose of this program is to demystify the myths around hormones, mood and psychiatric medications, Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), antisocial behaviors, and psychiatric medications used in Personality Disorders.

Dave Sallengs, RPh is the Branch Manager of Drug Enforcement & Professional Practices Branch of the Office of the Inspector General.
John Tiggelaar, PharmD is a Professor at Eastern Kentucky University.
